CBCT® – Cognitively-Based Compassion Training

NEXT COURSE BEGINS JULY 2, 2017 in Hollywood, CA

CBCT® (Cognitively-Based Compassion Training) was developed in 2005 by Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, in response to a series of suicides within the Emory student body. Determined to halt this trend, a group of students, professors, and other Emory University professionals was convened to conduct research and create a curriculum that could help students cultivate a healthy mindset, heightened feelings of connectedness with others, and the ability to inhibit feelings of unhappiness, loneliness, worry, anxiety, and depression.

While originally developed for college students, over the past several years the CBCT program has been offered to a wide array of people who wish to reduce stress and anxiety, increase empathy, emotional intelligence, happiness and immune system function, and/or cultivate or deepen feelings of connectedness, love, and compassion in their lives. Research studies conducted on CBCT can be found here. Participants have included children and teens in schools and foster care, health and higher education professionals, trauma survivors, and business leaders and employees, to name a few. The CBCT program has been also been offered at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and, beginning this fall, second year medical students at Emory University will participate in CBCT as part of their medical school curriculum. Participants in the program generally meet weekly for 1.5 to two hours over a period of 8 to 10 weeks and are encouraged to meditate daily between classes.

CBCT is not a religious program, though it draws on teachings from the Tibetan lojong tradition, which emphasize the value of training the mind for the purpose of reducing one’s suffering and creating happiness. Participants are invited to tie in their personal religious and spiritual beliefs as they discover correlations between those beliefs and the course content. The core concepts covered in this program include:

o    Developing Attention and Stability of the Mind

o    Understanding the Nature of the Mind

o    Self-Compassion

o    Impartiality

o    Appreciation and Affection

o    Empathy and Engaged Compassion (also known as compassionate love)
